Part 1: ASSIGNMENT 1 - SAY HELLO

Greeting Card - Say Hello

Final drawing: I decided on a self portrait in black fine liner so that my tutor could identify me immediately. I also felt the need to start by drawing from direct observation. I used a lot of pressure with heavily coloured oil pastels to convey the vibrance and intensity of possibility existing in the world, 'outside of myself'.

One of my ideas was to incorporate plants to symbolise the growth that I felt portrayed what I would like to accomplish on the Illustration course. Black fineliner and pilot pen, pencil, coloured pencils and extreme detail in mini picture form. But I abandoned it in favour of something more directly visual.

I collected some of my earlier sketches and collaged them into a newspaper shape to convey me looking at my art and discovering new things. Collage works. Problem is the focal point/composition is so lost that I abandoned the idea completely. It doesn't communicate properly and has meaning only for me not my tutor. Need to be aware of the bigger picture.

RESPONSES TO TUTOR REPORT – ASSIGNMENT 1 for assessment

Points from Jane to consider for future exercises:
A positive response about drawing from observation – continue to do so.
Practice drawing at different paces, quickly on longer and more considered ‘stints’
Think less!
Focus on the weight, tone, colour of line.
Integrate text and play in a loose way within illustrations.
Formalise my learning blog.
Artists to reference:  Use the work of some of these illustrators in my own going forward.
