SKETCHBOOK UPLOADS

Using fine liner pen and watercolour with difficulty. Fine liner smudges. How then is this so well achieved in kids books. Foot note: Asked my tutor after I'd drawn this - use a waterproof pen!

Copy of illustration by Edward Ardizzone to get the 'feel' of this artist - Part 1 History of Illustration (exercises)

Preparation for Part x, Exercise x.

Thumbnail practice.

Playing with collage. Referencing Sarah Fanelli from my exercises and her use of geometric collage.

Playing with textured paper, words and doodles without any specific intention to draw perfectly from reality. Done with Lauren Child's ideas as inspiration.

Using coloured pencils and wax in the style of Tony Ross in my Learning Log. It works if you know what you are doing. This lacks creativity.

Workspace: graphite and charcoal

Very quick drawings of characters on television.

Quick drawing of characters on television.

Typography in text. Could do with a wrap around the apple, have a look at Charlotte Strawberry's illustrations. See learning log.

Over the fence at home: tonal drawing, roof tiles after Mike van der Merwe in my Learning Log

Kirstenbosch Gardens: tonal drawing, not that successful in midday sun, how to get this right? Take photocopies of colour scenes and study them

Added colour as an afterthought in the style of Tony Ross. This is not intuitive for me.

Empty spaces, looking at Greg Betza and also Mieke van der Merwe in my Learning Log

Cafe Madeline - drawing from direct observation.

Understanding the vital importance of negative space. Looking at Charlotte Strawbridge illustrations in my Learning Log.

Remember to vary the thickness of lines - see Mieke van der Merwe's illustrations in my Learning Log

Different line pressure - but needs more energy as per Greg Betza in my Learning Log.

Experimenting with colour and texture - yes Greg Betza, Learning Log

Urban scenes are my fodder. When I'm waiting in my car inbetween trips to work, school and home, there are things to draw. It's also the type of time I have when I'm able to take a moment to sit, uninterrupted...

Black fineliner - sketching the garden, an exercise in textural detail, very slow drawing though. I could've tried going faster as suggested by my tutor.
Pencil sketch of a bistro diner, cross hatching and varied line thickness still not loose enough.
