Part 2: Exercise - Exploring Drawing and Painting

Used coloured paper, koki pen, pencil crayon and acrylics. I cross hatched the fruit cake, then painted, drew and stuck paper down. Not sure that this works in any way except for the cutting of the paper.

Bleach, acrylic and fineliner pen. I was very surprised to discover how bleach and paper work together. The bleach dissolved the green paper and turned it white so I embellished a little with acrylics and created a wedding cake. The fineliner added definition and I tried to vary the thickness of the lines. The splotches were a mistake but I included them. Bleaching opens lots of opportunities for pen strokes.

Bleach, food colouring, acrylic and crayon. The bleach crumpled the paper here which is why it scanned in streaks on the blue. I used yellow food colouring for the cake and bleach for the topping and filling which gave a nebulous cloudy look. I had to use crayons and acrylics to define and give detail to bring it together. This didn't go well for me, it got really clumsy. Got to be really delicate with the bleach. Very important.

Brown houndstooth textured cartridge, pink and white striped tissue paper, and white pencil. I think this could work with something else, this picture totally lacks form and depth. It was very experimental and I used the candy stripes to suggest sweetness.

Splattering and dry brushing with acrylics, fineliner and crayon for the cake. I cropped this at an angle to emphasise the explosion. Love the splats.

Oil pastels and acrylic paint with smudging on handmade heavily textured paper which you can't see here. Quite an interesting effect actually, specially with the pastels on the paper.

Red cartridge paper with a slight texture, pastels and crayons
with dry brush acrylic. The dry brushing working as a texture
but I think the red is overpowering and distracts
Pencil crayon, felt tip pen, tissue paper with a pattern, houndstooth cartridge. I cross hatched and scribbled the cake, then drew the apricots and oranges in felt tip and crayons. I quite like the way the felt tip works on the houndstooth. I feel like a preschooler with my scissors, such fun to have discovered a penchant for cutting and decorating with pattern and design. My tutor has pointed me in the direction of Lauren Child (Charlie and Lola illustrator) since I did this...

Handmade paper with oil pastels and acrylics plus some felt tip pen. Splattering with paint gives such movement and coloured texture. Heavy paper a bit sluggish when used with this media. I will avoid this paper in future.
