Part 2: Exercise - Writing a brief

My Brief to Illustrator Jennifer Emery for this illustration:

Content: Create an interesting female character, age typical of the reader and show and describe how she spends her summertime.

Tone: Illustrations must tell an engaging story at a relaxed pace.

Elements need to be easily identifiable with colourful depictions. Delicate detail so that each picture is ephemeral enough to tell a story itself whilst understanding the story as a whole idea.
Decorative and informative. Lots of detail for a visual feast of information to draw the reader in and encourage page interaction so that the reader can identify and name different elements and conclude their own story within each page.

Visual style aspects include: summer, sun, playing, relaxed, happy, uplifting, bright, clear, fun, gardens, potplants, pets, toys, lunch.
Audience: three to six years. Illustrations need to assist the narrative very visually for pre-school ages, at the same time the narrative would be suitable for those just starting to read alone but needing larger pictures to keep it engaging.

Application: Use a vibrant energetic pallet. Happy colours like sweets.

Primary tools could be: Colour pencils, watercolour, acrylic/gouche to flatten and intensify colour. Fineliner or Indian Ink.
